YMCA Racquetball: Intense workout cultivates social community

The Fergus Falls Area Family YMCA is not just a gym to many of its members. For Susan Schatz, her husband, David Nelson and many other racquetball players, the YMCA is a place for community and relationships.

Schatz is recently retired from Lake Region Healthcare as a lab director. Before retirement and now, Schatz has been coming to the YMCA three to five times a week to play racquetball. She usually comes to the YMCA between noon and 1 p.m., but most players start coming at 11 a.m.

“That is when most of the racquetball players can get away from work and head back when they are done,” Schatz said.
Schatz started playing racquetball at the YMCA in 1976 and over the years the group has changed.

“We used to have more women playing, but that diminished,” Schatz said. “Now, I am the only female who plays on a regular basis.”

Although Schatz plays often, she said she is not much of a competitor. She mostly plays racquetball for the relationships she finds with other players and for the intense workout she can get in a short period of time.
